Nangarhar: Muhtasibs Prevent a Girl from Being Given Away in Exchange for a Large Sum of Money

Officials (Muhtasibs) of the Nangarhar Directorate for the Promotion of Virtue, Prevention of Vice, and Hearing of Complaints, in an effort to uphold women’s rights and prevent incidents of violence against women in society, have helped save a young woman who was being forced by her family members to marry against her will in exchange for a large sum of money. 
The case was resolved through the mediation of religious scholars and tribal elders.
Officials (Muhtasibs) said that the young woman’s family members had intended to marry her off against her will in an unlawful marriage in exchange for a large amount of money. 
The religious inspectors intervened and prevented the marriage.
Meanwhile, in Maidan Wardak province, the religious inspectors annulled the forced marriage of a woman whose family members had married her off to a man against her will. 
After learning about the case, the inspectors intervened and annulled the marriage, allowing the woman to receive what were described as her Sharia-based rights.
