Prevention of the forced marriages of four women in Zabul Province
Personnel (Muhtasibs) of the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue, Prevention of Vice, and Hearing Complaints of IEA, in the Arghandab and Shah Joy districts of Zabul Province prevented four cases of forced marriage involving women, as part of efforts to ensure women’s Sh/ar/ia rights and address public complaints.
These complaints were related to four women whose families intended to force them into marriages with men they did not approve of.
After the complaints were registered and reviewed, the ministry personnel prevented the implementation of these marriages. The families involved were also summoned to the Department for the Promotion of Virtue in the province, where they were given the necessary guidance regarding the observance of women’s Sh/a/ria rights and their right to choose a spouse.
As a result, the family members expressed remorse and pledged that, from now on, they would respect women’s Sh/ar/ia rights in all aspects of life and would marry off their daughters only with their consent.
Although Is/la/m guarantees the right of both women and men to choose their spouses, in some cases, due to undesirable customs and practices contrary to religious values, families force their daughters into marriages with individuals they do not approve of.
